This week our focus has been Firefighters; we discussed how to work as a team and played a range of games that required team work. In Literacy we wrote a list of the Firefighter’s equipment and wrote the question we would like to ask the Firefighters when they come to visit. In Maths we used a range of shapes to draw the Fire Engine, and we ordered, measured and recorded the heights of the ladders.
In Literacy we made a word bank for the uniform a Firefighter wears. We drew a picture of a Firefighter and used the word bank to label our picture. In Maths we have been looking at the correct formation of the numbers. Our Grey Mouse Challenge was to use the number line to count on and back and to say the number that was one more and one less. We used our Phonics and tricky words to write our own sentences. We had a visit from someone who helps people to understand information in their own language.
We had a visit from PC Woods and Karen, the Community Support Officer. They told us what their job entails. We looked at their uniform, we held a baton and Miss Mawhood was handcuffed! We all wrote about our exciting experience. In Maths we have been learning to take-away and have been recording our number sentences.
In Literacy this week we have continued to explore different types of post. We explored the different types of post in the story ‘The Jolly Postman’. We used this to help us write letters and post cards.
In Maths we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We have used sorting objects to discover sharing equally and finding odd amounts in quantities.
We have been completing programmes using the IPad to strengthen our fine motor skills and have been drawing using the IWB. We celebrated the start of Book Week on Friday by dressing up as our favourite book character and we are looking forward to reading our favourite books next Monday. Don’t forget to visit the Book Fair next week!
Wow! What an exciting beginning to the week; we walked into St Albans on the lookout for ‘People Who Help Us’. We found the bank, a Dentist, Estate Agents and then finally the Post Office. We watched the cashiers working, scanned the stamps and weighed a letter. We talked about the journey of a letter. We did an amazing piece of writing all about our trip. In Maths we looked at more or less; we counted how many objects we had and compared the amount to our partners. We were able to say who had more and who had less.
The children have come back to school taller and ready to learn! We introduced our new topic for this term, which is ‘People Who Help Us’. We looked at Non-Fiction books and compared them to Fiction books. We have been working with numbers and we have been sharing our news from the holidays. We enjoyed our first French lesson. If you or you know of anyone that would be willing to come in to speak to the children regarding a job that involves a public service please let the teachers know. Please keep revisiting the work we sent home and listening to the children’s beautiful reading.
We had a lovely time at the Pantomime watching ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We sang carols and enjoyed a yummy Christmas lunch. We have worked hard all term to earn the treat that we decided we wanted to work together to achieve. We hope you have a restful break and that the festivities are fun filled! We look forward to seeing you in 2015!
Well done to Reception for all singing beautifully and saying their words loudly during our Christmas Play ‘Whoops-A-Daisy-Angel’. We have been doing number work and have been sharing stories with our friends. We have been busy being creative just like the Elves in our story ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’.
