This week the children have been introduced to sentence writing. We have been forming sentences together, thinking about capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. In Maths we have been comparing weight and weighing objects using cubes on the balance scales. The children were also very interested in learning about the Royal Family.

Tricky words: I, the, to, go, no
This week the children have listened to the story of the Little Red Hen and her lazy friends who didn’t help her. The children ordered and decoded words from the story. We have been practising blending and segmenting words to support their reading. In maths the children have used numicon to solve addition. They have practised counting and recording their workings out. Soon we will visit the story of Jack and the Beanstalk in Literacy. We have planted beans in anticipation! In the meantime we will watch them grow!

Story next week: The Little Red Hen
The children have continued to enjoy the traditional tales that we are exploring in class. This week we described the characters from the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children have also retold the story and thought about their favourite part. In Maths the children have been sorting 2D shapes using their properties. During ‘child initiated learning’ we have continued to work alongside the children on their next steps. We are impressed by all the grey mice that we have in Reception. OOOO ARGH! The children have also been working mighty hard in their PE sessions, scrubbing the decks as pirates!

This week we continued the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children did a great job of ordering and retelling the story. We had lots of good impressions of the ‘Big Bad Wolf”! The children really enjoy responding and exploring stories. In Numeracy the children have been using Numicon to help match number and quantity. The children practised their counting and number recognition. We have also been counting along the number line. After half term we will be starting an art project based on the National Gallery’s ‘Take One Picture’. The painting is called ‘A Roman Triumph’, by Peter Paul Rubens. The children were introduced to the painting by listening to a soundscape.

Next weeks story: Little Red Riding Hood
This week the children have continued to enjoy their daily phonic songs. In Literacy the children have explored the characters in The Three Little Pigs. In Maths we have been learning the 2D shape names. The children went on a shape hunt and used shapes to design homes for the Three Little Pigs.
The highlight for the children this week was creating our carrot and coriander soup. They were busy peeling vegetables most of Monday morning! But thoroughly enjoyed it! We hope you all had a taste!

This week we have continued to explore the story of Cinderella. The children ordered and spoke about the different settings within the story. Thank you for continuing to supporting the children’s story telling language development when hearing them read. We also made links to the story of Cinderella by talking about the different people we have met.
There has been lots of ordering in Maths… including our numbers!! We have also been looking and playing with numbers in the environment.

This week the children have enjoyed the story of Cinderella. We have also used the story to support our phonics. The children have been practising oral blending and segmenting words. They have also practised recognising and continuing rhyming strings. Maths has had a number focus. We have been counting and ordering different quantities.
Next week we will continue to read Cinderella.
In Phonics we will begin learning our sounds. Watch this space for the sounds and any tricky words we have taught!
This week we have enjoyed making new friends. We have explored all the resources in our classroom and found out how to be like Grey Mouse! Each class has thought of their own class rules to follow this year too.
Thank you for bringing in your yellow Alban City Bags for sharing. It was fun learning about your summer holidays and has been a great way to get to know each other.
