Blending and Segmenting

Some parents have been asking us for some blending and segmenting activities to play at home to support reading.

Phonics blending is a way for children to decode words. With phonics blending, children join together the individual sound-spellings (also called letter-sound correspondence) in a word. Then, they slowly blend those sounds together (“j-a-m, jam”).

Segmenting in phonics is the ability to separate a word into its sounds. The sounds are called phonemes. Children verbally segment sounds in words to support writing, and segment sounds in words before blending to read.

Here is a video with some ideas to support you to blend and segment at home. If you have any questions please do come and speak to someone in the team!
