A Great Start

We hope you all have had a wonderful and relaxing summer break. It was so lovely to welcome you all, both children and adults, back to Alban City School this week. It has been a pleasure to see so many faces at soft start this week and you are welcome to come inside the classroom and have a look around.

The children have had the opportunity to complete a number of creative tasks this week, making their new peg and tray labels, as well as their helping hands. These will be added to the classroom over the next week. In addition, the children were tasked with decorating an image of a spray can to show all of their favourite things. In our classes, we have also discussed our classroom rules and expectations.

This week, we have introduced the story Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We will be exploring this text over the next four weeks, producing a series of different written pieces. So far we have read the first three chapters, learning all about Cam and his heart. The children have been able to generate insightful predictions about the story, selecting evidence from the text, and answered questions in Litercy to show their understanding. Next week, we will be writing a series of diary entries in role, focussing on our use of informal language and presentation.

In Maths, we have discussed place value, identifying the value of different digits depending on where they appear within a number. We have been reading and writing numbers up to eight digits in length which are written in both numerals and words. The children were able to chunk these numbers into groups of three digits and notice the repeating pattern of 1, 10 and 100. This knowledge will underpin our next topics based around number magnitude and rounding.

We are very excited to begin our History topic about the Mayans next week and will be locating key cities on a map. There will also be an opportunity to start our Science topic about the human body, with a key focus on the circulatory system.

From all the Year 6 team, we hope you have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.
