Welcome back

It has been fantastic to welcome back both Year 5 classes to the new school year. Both Mrs Humbles and Mr Clements have enjoyed getting to know their new classes this week and are looking forward to a successful and fun academic year.

Both classes have begun reading ‘There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom’, we discussed our first impressions of the main character, Bradley Chalkers, picking out key information which describe his appearance, personality and relationships with others.

Sage and Forest have competed in the ‘Spaghetti tower challenge’ to design and build the tallest free standing spaghetti with a marshmallow on top – not as easy as it sounds, with all children showing fantastic teamwork and persistence to compete against each other as teams.

Today, we have begun to develop their understanding of what a million actually is, using rice to demonstrate how much each value is actually worth working from 10 all the way to 10,000 using weight and scaling to calculate how much rice would be needed for 100,000 and 1,000,000 respectively.

Homework diaries will be bought home today for you to record any reading that the children are completing at home – homework and spellings will start from next Friday with further details coming on next week in the ‘Welcome to Year 5 videos’.

We have enjoyed speaking with all parents during soft start and encourage those who wish to come into the classroom to look at work, books and the learning environment.

Please remember that swimming will start on Tuesday 7th September. P.E will also begin from Friday with Mr Roberts, please ensure P.E. kits stay in school so that all children can participate.
