Mermaids, rainforest animals and habitats!

English We started the week by using our imagination and writing about things that we dream of seeing and dream of being.  We then looked at a creative picture book called ‘Julian is a Mermaid’ and made predictions about what we thought the story was going to be about.  After reading it, we have thought about the characters and what they are thinking and feeling and have done some lovely descriptive writing.

Maths – In Maths we have been working on our subtraction strategies for subtracting  a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number.  We have been counting back in tens, using dienes  and using the written method.  We are focusing on the tens and ones in a 2-digit number to help us, and are working out which strategy works best for us.

Art – Art this week has helped us to understand colour a little bit more.  We have been colour mixing and know that two primary colours can be mixed to make a secondary colour.  Each week we are discussing a different Kandinsky painting and sharing how it makes us feel and what we can see.

GeographyAfter finding out about the layers in the rainforest, this week we have done some research about a rainforest animal.  We wanted to find out about their habitat, diet and size and found out lots of very interesting facts.

REIt was lovely to have Mrs Wood visit us this week and talk about her faith and the meaning behind particular prayers. As a class we created our own poem expressing our gratitude.

Science – This week we used some natural resources and our creativity to build our own microhabitats. I wonder if you can tell which microhabitats we built: rockpool, fallen log, leaf litter, under a stone or rotten tree stump. Can you spot the the key features that help the living things survive in the microhabitats i.e. underneath a stone it is dark and damp, perfect for a hiding place from predators!

As you can see, it has been another busy, fun-filled week in year 2.

Keep up the good work at home – reading, TTRockstars and practising your spellings.

Have a great weekend.

The Year 2 Team.
