Year 2 - Crimson and Scarlet

Welcome to Year 2.

Our Teachers are Mrs Garcia, Mrs Hanbury-Smith, Mrs Wood and Mr Bushell. Our Teaching Assistants are Miss Kotrcova and Miss Moss.

9th October

In English we have been practicing using commas in lists.  If you need a shopping list written, you know who to ask!

In maths we have been ordering numbers from smallest to biggest, taking note of their place value.

Thank you to those of you who are helping your children learn their spellings and do their homework.  Your support is really appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you next week at the parent consultations.

2nd October 

On Tuesday this week we had a fabulous 'Digital Innovation' workshop. We had to build a Lego fairground carousel and programmed it to spin at different speeds. It was wonderful to see the proud little faces when their Lego models whizzed round.  

In English the children have done some super writing. They have continued the retelling of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and have really enjoyed writing a familiar story. It has been lovely to see this continuing into their Discovery time, where they have chosen to write little books or label drawings of the beanstalk.  

We are really looking forward to our trip to Mountfitchet Castle on Thursday. Please provide your child with a packed lunch and comfortable footwear. The children should wear school uniform and bring a raincoat (though the forecast is currently looking good!). Thank you for all the volunteers for help, we are sorry that we can't take you all!.

25th September 

We have had another fun week in Year 2, ending with a Languages Day, where it was so lovely to have a few parents in to share their language and stories from their countries. We really appreciate their time and preparation for this.  

In English we have read Jack and the Beanstalk and we are retelling the story with a story map and actions. The children have written some amazing starts to their stories and are using capital letters and full stops brilliantly. 

Maths has been all about missing numbers - counting forwards and backwards in tens and ones. We are using a 100 square to help us and are doing really well.  

Our Science topic at the moment is 'Materials' and we enjoyed a materials scavenger hunt around the classroom and have been thinking about the properties and uses of different materials.  

Thank you to everyone who has handed back their homework books and learnt the week's spellings. We really appreciate your support with this.

18th September 

We have really enjoyed our topic of castles and can name all the features and their purposes, such as battlements, arrow slits, moat and drawbridge.  It has been great fun drawing and labelling castles, making models using boxes and construction.  This week we have focused on jobs within the castle and all the important roles that different people had.  We made booklets and top trump cards to show our learning.

In English we have used 'Zog' by Julia Donaldson to inspire some lovely descriptive sentences, using creative adjectives.  We have been very impressed with the children's handwriting and punctuation.  

In Maths we are working on number sequencing, using number lines and 100 squares, working out missing numbers.  

We have had a fabulous first few weeks in year 2.
