We hope you have all had a brilliant summer break. It was so lovely to welcome you all, both children and adults, back to Alban City School this week. The children have settled in really well to their new classrooms and already seem right at home being the oldest children in the school!
This week, we have introduced the story of Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We will be exploring this text over the next four weeks and producing written work across different genres. So far we have read the first five chapters, learning all about Cameron and his heart. The children have been able to generate insightful predictions about the story, selecting evidence from the text, and answered questions in English and Let’s Read sessions to show their understanding. Following on from that, we have written a diary entry in role, focussing on our use of informal language.
In Maths, we have discussed place value, identifying the value of different digits depending on where they appear within a number. We have been reading and writing numbers up to eight digits in length which are written in both numerals and words. The children were able to chunk these numbers into groups of three digits and notice the repeating pattern of 1, 10 and 100. This knowledge will underpin our next topics based around number magnitude and rounding.
We are very excited to begin our History topic about the Mayans and started by locating key cities on a map. Lots of exciting lessons to follow.
We have had a discussion about the various roles and responsibilities available to Year 6 children and the deadlines for applying for those positions.
We hope you all have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.
