All about friendships!

In Phonics we have taught the sounds ck, e, u and r. We have continued to segment and blend words for reading and writing. We have also enjoyed thinking of words that start with these initial sounds. The ‘harder to read and spell words’ this week were ‘into’ and ‘go’. We were practising to use these within sentences.

In Maths we have been focusing on developing our counting skills up to 5 to enable the children to identify how many there are in a set that cannot be subitised. We focused on the counting skills of moving objects and counting as they moved them. We also practised 1-1 correspondence by touching each object slowly as we counted.

This week in Reception we have been focusing on friendships. We have read the story ‘We are friends’ and discussed the importance of being kind to others with both our words and our actions. We then read the story ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’. This story helped us to think about kind and unkind actions and how it will make others feel. We will continue to focus on friendships and how our actions can impact relationships.

In PE we became witches and wizards. We pretended to fly on our broomsticks, cast magic spells and create a magic potion using ingredients that the children chose.

On Thursday we celebrated the European Languages day. It was so lovely to see all the children dressed up in either their traditional clothing or the colours of their countries flag. During the day we shared stories from different countries, listened to music and songs and learn how to say hello in different languages.

Key Points

  • Just a reminder that the Phase 2 phonics sounds that we are covering this term are stuck into your child’s yellow reading record. We have also put a copy of this and the ‘harder to read and write words’ onto Google Classrooms.
  • On Wednesday there was a Phonics talk, if you were unable to make it or would like to revisit the presentation, that has also been put onto Google Classrooms.
  • On the school website you will be able to find a video that shows how we teach Phonics, including how we pronounce the pure sounds.
