We have been very busy in Reception this week as the children became authors and wrote their own books all about dinosaurs! They each choose different dinosaurs to draw and write a fact they had learnt about this dinosaur. We focused on using our segmenting and blending strategies for writing such as ‘robot arms’. We also encouraged the children to think about the features of a sentence such as finger spaces, full stops and capital letters.
In Maths we have introduced ‘positional language’, which refers to words/phrases that describe an object’s position in relation to other objects. For example, ‘the bag is under the table’. ‘the hat is on top of their head’, ‘the teddy is next to the water bottle’.
In Phonics we have continued to recap our phase 2 and phase 3 phonics sounds and harder to read words. We have had a big focus on trying to identify digraphs and trigraphs within words when reading. We have also spent time segmenting and blending words for writing simple words and sentences. We use our sound mats and rhymes to support sound recall and letter formation.
Key Points
- After half term our new topic will be ‘Under the Sea’. If you have any resources to support our topic or to help us to make our new role play area then they will be greatly appreciated. We also welcome any books about ‘Under the Sea’ if children want to share these with the class.
- Our Reception classes are skill very keen on junk modelling. Please help us to collect recycling over the half term for the children to use. There is a brown box opposite Lime class door that you can put these in.
- A note from Mr Bushell- In case you didn’t already know, there is a new series on BBC iPlayer called Wonderblocks. This series is made by the creators of Numberblocks and Alphablocks, it introduces computational thinking and programming.
We hope you all have a great half term break.
