Fruit kebabs – yum!

Hi everyone,

Welcome back. We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break.

The children have had a great few days and enjoyed exploring the new playground.  We have seen lots of smiling faces, as the children have more equipment and materials offering opportunities for creative child initiated play.

In phonics, we are revisiting all the phase 5 sounds we have learned. The children are practising applying the sounds in reading and writing.

In English, we read Mr Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham and used the text to explore verbs in the past tense. The children role played the story and created a story map which will used next week to write their own version of the story.

In maths, the children have started to look at division by sharing amounts between two. They have been making links between odd and even numbers and whether the number is in the 2 times tables. The children have learned about equal and unequal amounts and remainders.

In D.T. the children made fruit kebabs. Before making their fruit kebabs they learned that fruit can grow on trees, bushes and vines and that they grow in different countries. We discussed the fact that many of the fruits we buy from the supermarkets are flown in from different countries. The children designed their own fruit kebab, choosing the fruit they liked and the equipment needed. Using chopping, peeling and sorting skills they made their own  tasty fruit kebabs.

Please check your child’s book bag for this week’s spellings and their reading book.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The Year 1 team.
