Reading, Rounding and Responsibilities

And just like that, we’ve come to the end of our first full week in Year 6! The children have settled in really well to their new classrooms and already seem right at home being the oldest children in the school!

In English, we have been reading the Malorie Blackman book, Pig Heart Boy.  It’s a gripping story with lots of interesting things to discuss and some controversial ideas to debate.  We have completed some research and next week, we will begin writing our balanced arguments on whether xenotransplantation – transplantation of cells and organs from one species to another – should be allowed.

In Maths, we revised place value, identifying the value of different digits and went back over rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and to 1 and 2 decimal places. Please remind children to be practising their times table on a regular basis at home; these underpin the majority of the maths curriculum and will really help them in all areas.

We are very excited to begin our History topic about the Mayans and have started by locating key cities on a map.  Lots of exciting (and gruesome) lessons to follow.

We have had a discussion about the various roles and responsibilities available to Year 6 children and the deadlines for applying for those positions.

We hope you all have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.
