Fabulous Festivals!

This week we have been finding out about festivals that take place in Autumn  including Sukkot, Diwali and the Harvest Festival.  We began by exploring Sukkot and looked at the ways this festival is celebrated by people and what it means to them.  The children have particularly enjoyed building sukkahs in our outside area and then getting creative designing and decorating their own mini sukkah using junk modelling and lego.

In English we read the story ‘ Harvest Days: Giving Thanks Around the World by Kate DePalma which explores the themes of harvest  and giving thanks in different countries.  We have been working hard to develop our sentence writing and the children wrote about things that they are thankful for.

In Maths, we have begun to work on finding how many more and how many fewer using images and looking at strategies to make calculations for example, counting on.  This progressed onto finding the difference between two given numbers and the children used their knowledge and help them solve the problems.

In phonics we have been revisiting the Phase 5 sounds: wh, ph, ue and oe.  We have been reading words with these sounds as well as reading and writing sentences to help us with our spelling.

Next week, we are lucky to have Mr Gamester (Sky Class) provide an extra PE lesson for us.  This will take place on Monday morning, so please do ensure your child’s PE kit is in school.

Many thanks for all your support with reading with your child and sending in your junk modelling items!

Have a lovely weekend!
