Hi everyone,
In English this week, we introduced another version of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We compared the two versions and looked for similarities and differences. We explored all the characters and asked the children to describe them. We revisited adjectives and how we use them in our writing to improve it. The children created a list of words to describe Goldilocks and used them in their writing. We discussed how to change a part of a story to make a new version. The children wrote their own version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears by creating a new ending.
In Maths, we explored how to double an amount and represent it in a number sentence. The children used mirrors to show doubling an amount. They made a tower of cubes to match the number. We talked about making another tower of the same amount, keeping the towers apart and then model counting both together. We wrote a number sentences to show our understanding.
For example:
5 + 5 = 10
10=5 + 5
Double 5 is 10
We continued with our Science topic this week about everyday materials and their properties. We carried out the experiment to find the most suitable bowl to use for baby bear’s porridge. The children made predictions last week and compared the results with them. We discussed whether there was more than one option and the properties that made it the best choice.
During Continuous Provision, the children made the bears’ cottage, chair, beds and bowls using the resources in the classroom. They made puppets which they used to retell the story. They enjoyed writing about their favourite story character.
In Phonics, we continue to revise all the Phase 5 sounds and the harder to read and write words:
Please continue to read with them daily and mark this in their reading log. Keep practising all the phonics sounds on the list provided before the half term break.
This half term Year 1 will have two PE lessons a week, one on a Monday morning and one on Wednesday morning.
Next we will be reading the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We would appreciate any versions you may have at home to read with Year 1 over the week.
Have a great weekend, keep warm!
