Hi everyone,
In English this week, the children explored the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. They used the Aiden Chambers’ talk grid which encourages children to discuss what they like, dislike about the story; they look for patterns and puzzles in the writing. The children enjoyed creating a story map and using it to role play the story in small groups. The children had the opportunity to talk about the way the characters were feeling throughout the story. As part of oracy focus, the children had the opportunity to debate when Little Red Riding Hood went to visit her grandma and took a basket of fruit. Did she make the right choices along the way?
In Maths, we introduced the concept of halving. We started by showing the children a stack of 10 cubes and asking them how to find half of the amount. We modelled breaking the tower into 2 equal parts, emphasising that they have to be equal. I have halved 10 – half of 10 is 5. The children worked in pairs to explore creating a halving chain starting with 20 cubes for example: half of 12 is 6, half of 6 is 3 and now we stop. because we don’t have a whole number answer. Before they started they wrote down which number they thought would have the longest chain. At the end of the week the children worked on solving worded doubling and halving problems.
This week our topic in PSHE is jealousy. The children discussed the emotion of jealousy; what it feels like and makes our body feel. They created a list of examples of jealousy and talked about how to overcome this emotion.
During Continuous Provision, the children created routes for Little Red Riding Hood to get through the woods to grandma’s house. Using building materials and small world materials the children built grandma’s cottage, forest scenes and a trap for the wolf. They completed Little Red Riding Hood’s Basket” writing activity where children could write: shopping lists, letters to Grandma, descriptions of the characters.
In Phonics, we continue to revise all the Phase 5 sounds and the harder to read and write words: should, would, could, water, push, pull. If you would like to revise the Phase 5 sounds at home our phonic scheme is Essential Letters and Sounds. Here are some ideas for activities you can play phonic games online:
- ICTgames – letters and sounds Bingo
- Twinkl phonics
Please continue to read with them daily and mark this in their reading log. Keep practising all the phonics sounds on the list provided before the half term break.
This half term Year 1 will have two PE lessons a week, one on a Monday morning and one on Wednesday morning.
