Yesterday, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Epping Forest to consolidate their work on rivers. We were impressed by the amount of knowledge and vocabulary they already had remembered about the water cycle and river systems and we learnt more to add to it.
We went on a walk through Epping Forest and looked at how the rocks and soils affect the local river system, from the pebble grave, which allows water through it to the clay bed, which won’t. This meant we could see an actual source of a river in the forest itself. To the untrained eye, it was just a muddy bit of ground but we spotted the clues in knowing it was a river.
In the afternoon, we took a trip further down stream and enjoyed finding out how a river works. We measured its width, depth, pebble size and speed of flow at two river sites. We found out that the further downstream you go, the slower the water because it gets deeper and there is more water as other tributaries affect it.
We had a lovely day, as it was great to get out into nature to learn and paddle in the river to carry out our experiments. Thank you to our volunteers for coming to help us.
